James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band celebrated their Ten Year Anniversary in April of 2004. Marking ten years of making Memphis Music at Rum Boogie Café on Historic Beale Street in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee. The members are Charles Campbell, Dedrick Davis, James Govan, Pete Fletcher, Bill Darby, and Don Chandler. (click on the names to see the pictures)
Throughout the years the band lineup has changed a little here and there but the current lineup is James Govan: vocals and percussion, Don Chandler: Hammond B-3, Yamaha DX 7, Bass& Background Vocals, Bill Darby: Guitar and Vocals, Pete Fletcher: Drums, Dedrick Davis: Trumpet, Charles Campbell: Baritone and Tenor Saxophone.
In the last ten years, James Govan and the Boogie Blues Band have received numerous awards including winning the Best House Band on Beale Street THREE times by the Beale Street Merchants Association and have headlined the BSMA awards for the 2002-2004 Awards Ceremonies.
James and Don have been playing on Beale Street for more than 15 years and have played more nights on Beale Street than any other current Beale Street musicians. They both received an honorary key to the city from the City of Memphis, an honor never before bestowed upon any Memphis Musician on Historic Beale Street.
Entertaining people from around the world is a nightly pleasure for James and the the band who perform at Rum Boogie Café five nights a week 50 weeks a year.
James and the band have recorded two live CD’s at Rum Boogie which are still available. The latest is called “A Night on Beale” and was recorded in 1998 at Rum Boogie Café and has received critical acclaim from the Memphis Press. The CD captures that live sound sound that has echoed Beale Street for the last 10 years entertaining crowds all year long from around the world.
Specializing in authentic “Memphis Music”, Govan sings the blues under the glow of the legendary STAX Record Company letters that adorned the famous studio in the 60’s and 70’s.
Rum Boogie’s commitment to authentic Memphis Music continues 7 nights a week and solidifies Beale Street as “Home of the Blues, Birthplace of Rock n Roll”.
